The time-frequency method of frequency analysis of the aortic blood velocity envelope (ABVE) has been developed to evaluate blood flow of the aorta and of the blood distribution in the periphery. During the last decade, a two-channel time-frequency method of ABVE recording, with a sampling rate of 4 MHz, has been used in the examination of the aorta of healthy persons and patients with various diseases. For analysis of the ABVE, the FFT algorithm has been applied to the main spectral components in the range of 0 to 5 Hz. The first component shows high frequency oscillations and carries the energy only in the low frequency range. The following components in the frequency range of 0 to 0.2 Hz show asymmetrical maxima and minima, which spread over the whole spectrum and are caused by interferences between the various low-level blood flow components. The last component consists of almost symmetrical low-level oscillations, which may be interpreted as a result of the non-steady flow of the blood in the aorta. By means of computer analysis of ABVE traces, the hemodynamic parameters of the aorta and the peripheral circulation could be determined in a non-invasive way in a continuous and reliable manner. In the present article, the time-frequency method of ABVE recording was evaluated. In conjunction with the aortic blood flow velocity curve (ABVC), a correlation between the amplitude ratio (ARA) and the cardiac output was established.
